A few of us decided at last minute to meet up over the New Year for a round of drinks at the food court in Taman Megah - Meng Tien. Only a few showed up but as always, it only takes a few Seaportian to make any outing enjoyable and memorable! It was also Azri’s birthday so we bought him a drink. Yea… Cheapo guys we are… So only ONE drink. :)
Anyway, we also bumped into… Mr Long. Yes, the physics teacher famous for ‘mind maps’. We found out that he’s no longer with Seaport/ Sri Permata and has been teaching in Bandar Utama for a few years now.
But he’s also no longer in Bandar Utama as he’s currently in Australia with his family for the next two years or so. But I have managed to get his contact and will ask him to drop by this spot once he’s settled-in…
In the meantime, here’s how he looks with his Bandar Utama students.

And feel free to leave comments for him. I’ll try to get him to reply when I hear from him.
Mr. Long showed us a new way to learn things and that a picture is more easily grasp than words. It is a great lost to loose these people. Too bad we cannot have met on better terms but some of us still apply his method of teachings today in other areas and not just physics. He is the kind of teacher who thinks out of the box. If Seaport has been a private school, things would have been different and I am sure that we would have an even better experience with Mr. Long.
If anyone met him the next time, please pass along the message and say that there are a handful of those who is using his way of teaching to apply in their everyday work. And do continue teaching the way he is.

Mr Long,
Don’t know if you remember me, but I was one of your Physics students back in Form 4/5 Seaport (1992/93)
You are a great teacher, and I’m sure a lot of your ex-students are grateful and remember you well.
Wishing you all the best and enjoy Australia!

Mr Long was a star trek fan. He uses a lot of acronyms in star trek in his physics. Like when we studied nuclear physics, he actually used the star trek transporter to show and example how the atoms can be rearranged to form a person back at the other receiving end. At that time we were so thought up of reality of passing exams and future life that we foresaw the delight and the joy he was trying to bring to the subject. We foresaw the true meaning, the true goal and the real sensation behind the subject physics. To us it was another exam to pass just to get through SPM and better marks for college. But to him, he was trying to drive our interest in the subject, so that one day we could use the theories of relativity to invent something as cool as the transporter in the star ship enterprise. Mr Long is the kind of teacher who dares to express himself in an unconventional way and IT WORKS and it shows that he is the very few truely GIFTED educators there are alive today. I did not see the meaning he was trying to convey until university where I myself became a trekki. Before that, star trek was a nice action tv show, nothing more. In fact Mr Long show me the right direction. A lot of things like MP3 players were inspired by star trek. The original inventors of MP3 saw Lieutenant Commander Data selecting songs and playing them simultanously on his computer. So the engineers thought that would be a great marketable idea and took it straight from the show.
Mr. Long, if you read this, just let you know that YOU ARE A MAN AHEAD OF YOUR TIME. LOOK FORWARD TO SEE YOU IN ALUMNI GATHERINGS.
